Revised norms for ranking for admission to the MA Degree course in English Language and Literature were issued as per U.O. read as first paper above on the basis of the resolution of the Academic Council at its meeting held on 24th and 25th May, 2006. Neither the Academic Council resolution nor the U.O. issued specifies that the new norms are in supersession of the earlier norms as contained in the Hand Book for admissions. The very issue of framing the revised norms came up for consideration of the Board of Studies in English and the Faculty of Arts because of the fact that students of BA Degree in Communicative English who were able to score higher marks on account of internal assessment marks cornered most of the seats for MA Degree Course in English Language and Literature.
The revised norms adopted by the Academic Council at its meeting held on 24th and 25th May, 2006, has rectified this anomaly. However, the U.O. read as first paper above does not clearly state how a BA degree holder who has scored higher marks in Part I English should be indexed. In fact, the academic authorities on no occasion had any idea to restrict or take away the benefit of 5% marks for Part I English in respect of BA degree holders in English Language and Literature. Also there was no mention where the 5 marks awarded to the students of Kerala University shall be added for computing the index.
Therefore, after having considered all the aspects involved in this regard, the following orders are issued regarding the norms for ranking for admission to the MA Degree Course in English Language and Literature:
1. A weightage of 5% marks secured for Part I or Part III be given to the holders of BA Degree in English Language and Literature and the weightage marks will be added to their marks in Part I or Part III whichever is advantageous to the candidates to find out the percentage marks as was done earlier.
2. Only the total of the marks secured for the core subjects of SII, SIV and SVI in respect of the holders of BA Degree in Communicative English, will be considered for ranking purposes.
3. For Non-English degree holders, Part I English should carry a minimum total of 300 marks to acquire eligibility for admission.
4. An additional weightage of 5 marks be given to all students from the University of Kerala. This mark shall be added to the mark secured for Part I or Part III as the case may be. In respect of BA degree holders in English Language and Literature, the 5 marks will be added after adding the 5% of marks to Part III or Part I as specified in Para I. For the convenience of Colleges worked out examples for arriving at the index marks are given below:
