Profile of the Institute of English
The Institute of English, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram was established in 1962 for giving leadership in the field of teaching and research in English Language and Literature in the state of Kerala. The academically rigorous curriculum at the Institute enables students to combine serious theoretical study with meaningful learning experiences. Whatever graduate students choose, they acquire a solid foundation in the liberal arts and pursue in-depth study in their chosen fields. The Institute’s unique core curriculum, its emphasis on the practical application and knowledge of the language prepare students to be major contributors in their fields. The traditional Kerala architectural styled building of the Institute, its Senate House Campus and location adds charm. Today, the Institute of English is the nerve centre of English teaching and research in Kerala.Established at the CMS College Kottayam in 1962, the Institute was shifted to the present venue in 1964. The Institute was chosen for the University Leadership Programme of the UGC for three years considering the contributions of the department to the field of higher education. The Certificate Course in Italian conducted by the Institute is the first of its kind in Kerala. There are five Centres attached to the Institute of English – the UGC Area Study Centre for Canadian Studies, the Centre for Comparative Literature, the Centre for Australian Studies, the Centre for Women’s Studies and the Centre for English Language Teaching.
Curricular Aspects
The Curriculum of the Institute of English is designed to offer diversity and flexibility to learners. The Institute offers an MA course (4 semesters) in English Language and Literature, an MPhil course (2 semesters) and Doctoral programme. The Institute encourages interdisciplinary research in new areas including Women’s Studies, Film Studies, Translation Studies and Comparative Studies. Taking into account the need of the times, a part-time PG Diploma Course in English for Communication (32 weeks) is being offered. The Institute has also offered a Certificate Course in Spoken English (48 hours) as well as a Certificate Course (24 weeks) for the study of the Italian Language, which attracted many Italian language enthusiasts.
Compatibility of Programmes with Goals
and Objectives
The MA programme, which was recently revised with UGC guidelines in mind, focuses on the Literature of Great Britain from the earliest times onwards, culminating in the latest trends in twentieth century literature, with Electives chosen from a wide spectrum ranging from New Literatures and Diasporic Writings, Comparative Literature, Women’s Writing, English Language Teaching, Linguistics. It is felt that the proposed projects will considerably enhance the research possibilities and curriculum content of the MA as well as MPhil programmes. The students are also encouraged to choose from among a set of interdisciplinary electives such as German, Russian, Computer Applications, Library Science, and Philosophy. The MA programme is tailored to meet the specific requirements of candidates appearing for the UGC National Eligibility Test and similar national level examinations. It lays stress in student participation in the classrooms and excellent training in research is given to students by making them write term papers, and a dissertation based on which a viva is conducted. The MPhil programme attracts students not only from Kerala, but also from neighbouring states. The PG Diploma Course in English for Communication is a boon to graduates and professionals like doctors, engineers and lawyers aspiring to master the skills of the English Language. The Doctoral programme at the Institute of English has the largest number of FIP candidates in the University of Kerala, and the topics selected for research reflect a wide range of interests. The Institute has already trained over 150 MPhil and 100 PhD candidates. The department also has many publications as well as a Departmental Journal titled The New Frontier. There is a good library with over 18000 volumes and 10 foreign and Indian journals. |
| The library has UGC INFLIBNET. The Library is also in the process of being computerized. |

The International
Journal of Dravidian Linguistics, the best journal on
linguistics from India was originally published from
the department. |
| The
Department of Linguistics was started in 1963. The
pioneer work of the Dialect Survey of Malayalam covering
all the Panchayats of Kerala and the Dialect Atlas
prepared by marking isoglosses have received international
recognition. In this field of dialect studies the
department occupies the foremost position amongst
the Indian Universities. The department has evolved
and developed a pragmatic theory called Cognate Method
of Language Teaching. This is considered to be most
suitable for teaching and learning of related languages.
Following the above said theoretical framework, the
department had organised a number of intensive courses
for teaching Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada. Another
theory put forward by the department for the identification
of syllable boundaries and the constituents within
a syllable is also worth mentioning.
The department has hosted UGC sponsored summer schools,
workshops and seminars on many occasions. The UGC
had included this department under its DRS programme.
Technology and Resource Centre for Malayalam is also
functioning under this Department. |

| The
Oriental Research Institute & Manuscripts Library
is one of the leading centres of Indological Studies
in our country. Researchers from both India and abroad
are in constant contact here.
The Manuscripts Library of this department has a proud
heritage of over a century. The department offers
facilities to do research in Sanskrit, Malayalam and
Tamil in the fields connected with Manuscriptology.
In association with IGNCA, the department is microfilming
the manuscripts of certain technical subjects.
The genesis of this library is to be traced to the
orders of Ayilyam Tirunal Maharaja (King) of Travancore
to collect all manuscripts in the state so as to be
kept in the safe custody of the Palace Library. Considering
the overwhelming enthusiasm from the Orientalists
all over the world, during early nineteen hundred
Swathi Thirunal Maharaja (the then King of Travancore)
published many of the manuscripts in the Palace Library
and the manuscripts collection of ancient families.
ORI & MSS - a treasure trove of Indian culture
The ORI and MSS library has over 65,000 works in 30,000
copies mainly of palm leaf manuscripts. In addition,
some paper manuscripts, a few copper plates, writings
on Bhurjapatra (birch bark), Agarutvak (the bark of
Amyris agallocha) and textiles are also found in the
collection. The manuscript collection also includes
those belonging to other different Indian states and
nations such as Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal
etc. Another interesting fact is that about eighty
per cent of the collections are in Sanskrit. The manuscript
collection of this department is an invaluable source
for the study of ancient scripts as Grantha, Vattezhuttu,
Sarada, Nandinagari, Grantha Tamil etc. The initial
moulds of scripts of modern Indian languages like
Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Oriya,
Assamese and Burmese are also found. |

The Department of
Zoology was established in 1968 with the late Prof.
K.K. Nayar as Head. One of the pioneers in insect endocrinological
studies in India, he organised this department as a
centre of excellence in the fields of Invertebrate Neuro-endocrinology
and reproductive Physiology, with generous assistance
from the Ford Foundation and PL-480 scheme of the US
Government.
The research activities of this Department have been
extended to various other areas like entomology, soil
biology, vector biology, vertebrate ethology, animal
physiology, wild life biology, conservation biology
etc.
The main academic activity of the Department is the
guidance of research students for their Ph.D. and M.Phil
degrees. It also offers M.Sc. in General & Applied Zoology
under the CSS. To it credit the department has already
trained over 100 M.Phil's and 90 Ph.D's. Besides, the
faculty members also undertake research projects sponsored
by various agencies such as DST, DBT, CSIR, UGC, STEC,
Ministry of Forest and Environment etc. Some of the
have also conducted collaborative studies with various
international experts in their fields of scpecialisation.
The research laboratories are well equipped with sophisticated
& modern equipments such as spectrophotometers, refrigerated
centrifuges, fluorescence microscope, Laminar, flow,
inverted microscopes, clinical analyzer, HPLC etc. There
is also a good library with around 4000 books.
An international quarterly journal viz: ENTOMON, which
is the official organ of the Association for the Advancement
of Entomology, is being published regularly from this
Department since 1976. Besides the various research
programmes outlined above, the Department also admits
students for their Master's degree in General and Applied
zoology under the credit and semester system. The curriculum
of this course, especially designed as per UGCk guidelines,
is different from that of the General M.Sc. course offered
by the affiliated colleges of the University. Students
undergoing this course have the added advantage of opportunities
to continue their academic pursuits through the M.Phil
and Ph.D. programmes offered by the Department. |
