The Academic Staff College, University of Kerala, sponsored by the University Grants Commission, was established in 1987. The main aim of the Academic Staff College is to conduct Orientation programmes for the newly appointed College/University teachers and Refresher Courses for senior teachers.               


So far, about 1366 teachers have attended the Orientation Programmes and 3097 teachers, the Refresher Courses. Eminent and distinguished persons like Dr. Ayyappa Paniker, Dr. Sukumar Azhikode, Sri. Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, Prof. O. N. V. Kururp, Prof. S. Guptan Nair, Prof. Hridaya Kumari, Dr. Nageswara Rao (Mysore University), Sri. Kavalam Narayanapanicker, Dr. G. K. Prasad (University of Madras), Dr. George Onakkur, Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair, Dr. N. A. Karim, Dr. G. Balamohan Thampi, Prof. G. N. Panicker and Sri. M. T. Vasudevan Nair have visited the Academic Staff College and engaged classes for the participants.     
          

The Orientation/Refresher Courses have proved to be of immense help to the teachers. The courses have significantly influenced the participants and helped them in apprising their performance.

When the Department of Publications of University of Kerala was established in 1939, there was hardly any institution of its kind in the State.

The main objectives of the Department are:
(1) To publish text books for the various courses of the University
(2) To publish books based on the results of the various research activities of teachers and other scholars of the University and thus help to widen the frontiers of knowledge, and
(3) To publish books of special interest such as classics and modern works, both original and translation, as resources permit and circumstances demand.

At present, the two major schemes undertaken by the Department are the Publication of Text Books (Malayalam, English and Hindi) and General Books (English, Malayalam, Sanskrit and Tamil). The Text books are meant for various courses like Pre-Degree, BA/B.Sc. and B.Com. To bring out text books in time, the Department maintain close co-ordination with various Boards of Studies concerned.

Some of the prestigious publications of the Department include Mahakavi Ulloor’s Kerala Sahitya Charitram (5 Volumes), Translation of the Rigveda by Mahakavi Vallathol (2 Volumes). An Artist in Life by Prof. Niharranjan Ray, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai by Dr. K. Ayyappa Paniker, Personality of Kerala by Dr. A. Ayyappan, Selected poems of Mahakavi Ulloor, Selected Poems of Kumaran Asan etc. The Department has always been rendering special service to the academic community by taking up the publication of those works which normally private publishers are not interested to undertake.               

Another ambitious project undertaken by the Department is the publication of a new series under the title ‘Malayala Sahithya Nayakanmar’. The scheme is to publish monographs on hundred eminent literary figures. Already, several titles have been brought out: Ezhuthachan - Prof. O.N.V. Kurup, Kunchan Nabiar - Dr. T. Bhaskaran, C. V. Raman Pillai - Dr. K. Ayyappa Panicker, Chandu Menon - Dr. K. M. Tharakan, A. R. Raja Raja Varma - Dr. P. V. Velayudhan Pillai, Kumarann Asan - Prof. M. K. Sanu, Kunhikuttan Thampuran - Dr. M. V. Vishnu Nampoothiri, V. C. Balakrishna Paniker - Dr. Desamangalam Ramakrishnan, Sanjayan - Dr. Sardarkutty, E. V. Krishna Pillai - Prof. K. Kumaran Nair, Cherusseri - Dr. V. R. Prabodhachandran, Vylolppalli - Dr. S. Rajasekharan etc..               

The other books in this series will brought out in a phased manner.               

Two other publications are Contribution of Kerala Writers to Indian Writing in English and Navodhana Samskaram Keralathil - brought out jointly with the International Centre for Kerala Studies, University of Kerala.               

The Department also publishes Ph.D. theses of high quality recommended by experts. The Department has already started the work of three such publications.               

The sales of books published by various Departments of the University like Malayalam Lexicon, Oriental Research Institute and Manuscript Library, Department of Malayalam, Institute of English etc., is also undertaken by the Department.

3. Department of Malayalam Lexicon

The Department of Malayalam Lexicon was started in July 1953, under the joint auspices of the Government of Travancore-Cochin and the University of Travancore. Consequent upon the Formation of the Kerala State in 1956, the University of Travancore was renamed the University of Kerala, and the work of the Lexicon Department continued directly under the recorganised University. Padmasree Dr. Sooranad Kunjan Pillai, the doyen of Kerala scholars, was the first Editor of this great project. The plan envisaged the compilation of a comprehensive Malayalam-Malayalam-English Dictionary on historical linguistic principles, which would be of use both to Malayali and non-Malayalai scholars.               

The Lexicon is designed to present, as far as possible, all the words in our language including loan-words from Sanskrit and languages. The published volumes of the Lexicon have earned the tributes of scholars. It has been praised as one of the best models of Lexicographic work. The entire credit goes to Dr. Sooranad Kunjan Pillai who masterminded this exquisite model and brought out the first two volumes.
 The first seven volumes of the Lexicon were published in 1965, 1970, 1976, 1984, 1985, 1988 and 1997. Copies of the published volumes are available in the Department of publication, University of Kerala.
4. Department of Student Services

A Department of Youth Welfare was established in 1961 for the promotion of cultural and social activities among students. The University Union, which started functioning in the same period aimed at the welfare of the students in the affiliated colleges of Kerala University. Later on, the Dfepartment of Youth Welfare was renamed the Department of Student Services and the elected members of the University Union began to steer the Union activities. Their office is also situated in the Department of Student Services for faciliting the various activities of students.               

The department of Student Services, since its inception, deals with activities aimed at the welfare of students such as collection and distribution of Students Aid Fund, University Union Fee etc. University and Inter-University Youth Festivals, Talent Awards, other Merit awards, Seminars and Quiz contests etc. for students under the Unniversity. The Accident Claim and Medical Reimbursement policy for the students of affiliated colleges and University departments was launched in 1996.
               

In addition to this, the Director of Student Services in his capacity as Foreign Students Adviser deals with the matters relating to the admission etc. of foreign students in the University of Kerala.
5. Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education, started in 1939 has all along been one of the most active Departments of the University. It has 13 trained professional coaches and one Instructor in Indigenous exercises.               

It conducts Inter Collegiate Sports and Games and participates in Inter University tournaments in 44 events (25 men and 19 women). Apart from organising Summer Coaching camps for talented players, special camps in all events are conducted prior to participation in the Inter University tournaments. Regular coaching and instruction programmes are also organised in the affiliated colleges of the University. A very active extension service is run for school children and several outside agencies rendering guidance and help in the actual conduct of coaching camps and and tournaments. A minimum of at least one Inter University tournament is organised by this Department every year. It is always a major partner in all tournaments and sporting events in and around Trivandrum, by lending its professional service, courts/playing facilities. etc.


Achievements 
Ranked among the first few in the Inter University sports and games in the country, the University of Kerala has bagged the coveted Dr. B. L. Gupta Trophy for General Championship in Inter University sports and games, for the year 1981/82 and 1982/83.


In International sports, the outstanding sportsmen and women from this University are numerous, a few among the recent luminaries are Shiney Abraham, Suresh Babu, Jolly James and and Sany Joseph (Athletics), Vimal Kumar, Krishna Kumar and Vinod Kumar (Shuttle Badminton), Jimmy George, Udayakumar, T. C. Jyotish, Beena Chacko, Beena Varghese, Abdul Razack (Volleyball), Renjini Jose (Basketball) and Minimol (Rowing)
     

In addition to the above programmes and performances, as a part of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the University of Kerala, an All Kerala Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet was organised at Quilon in 1998, South West Zone and All India Inter University (Women) Volleyball Tournaments were also organised in the capital in 1998.
      

The University Gymnasium attracts a good number of members and functions in the routine manner.
6. Computer Centre

The Computer Centre was formally inaugurated on July 16, 1977. It was the first Computer Centre in the capital, outside ISRO and the first academic Computer Centre in Kerala and neighbouring areas. Various Universities which were using its facilities were Cochin, Calicut, Agricultural, Tirupati Venkatewswara, Madurai Kamaraj and Annamali Universities.

Computer education was introduced for the first time in Kerala University with the starting of PG Diploma in Computer Science at the Centre in 1985.
               

The first e-mail connection in the capital was established at the Centre in 1993.
In 1989 the Computer Centre was recognised as a research centre. Hundreds of research scholars have utilised the service. The centre has also organised various Computer Courses for different groups including Research Scholars, College Teachers, Principles, Bank Officers, University Employees, Industries, Senior Executives etc.               

Computer Centre has played a major and productive role in the interaction with the State and Central Governments, Industries and various PSUs in providing Software support.
               

The Centre has played a major role in creating computer awareness and propagating computer culture in Kerala. There are various individual achievements also.  

The Computer centre has designed a software for the automated governance of examinations. This software, called SAGE, has transformed the way in which work related to B Tech and PG (Semester) examinations of the University. The computer centre has also devised a software to handle the work related to revaluation of answersheets. The centre has also imparted computer training to the staff.
7. National Service Scheme

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on September 24, 1969 in order to promote social consciousness, a sense of responsibility, and a sense of discipline and dignity of labour among college students. The scheme utilises the leisure time of students for two years of their college studies, in various item of social service, which not only helps the community, but also provides an opportunity to the students to understand the conditions prevalent in the community. The ultimate aim is to develop the personality of students through community service.

Activities undertaken by the NSS have included environment enrichment and conservation, health, family welfare and nutrition programmes, projects aimed at creating an awareness for improvement of the status of women, women’s development and gender justice, work in hospitals, production oriented work, non-formal education, healthy life-style education, AIDS awareness programmes, total authorities in rehabilitation work during natural calamities and emergencies.
               

The NSS has played an active role in making the ‘Laksham Veedu’ programme and the total literacy programme a great success. Of late, NSS programme officers and volunteers actively participated in the people’s planning programme being implemented in the state. Programme officers and volunteers also associated with various voluntary agencies and government agencies in spreading the message of national integration and communal harmony.
               

In the 50 villages adopted by the NSS Units of 50 colleges, it was able to conduct major rural reconstruction works. By cleaning wells, canals and ponds, laying of roads and playgrounds.


The NSS launched the project, ‘Home for the Homeless’ to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Year of Indian Independence. The project envisages construction of 50 houses for 50 homeless families, one each by NSS Unit of every college. In selecting the beneficiary, preference is given to widows without anyone to depend upon.
               

The beneficiary is selected by a committee consisting of the Principal, senior most programme officer and a representative of the general public. The resources for the construction of the house known as National Service Scheme Bhawan’ is raised by NSS Unit of the concerned college from among the general public, teaching and student community. A special mention should be made here that S. N. College, Kollam has already completed construction of 5 houses.
              
8. Shramik Vidyapeeth, Thiruvananthapuram
Shramik Vidyapeeth, Thiruvananthapuram was established by the Kerala University in 1984. A Board of Management, constituted according to the guidelines from the Government of India and headed by the Vice-Chancellor, looks after the functioning of the institution. The Vidyapeeth is guided by the instructions from the Directorate of Adult Education. Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has concentrated its work mainly in the urban and suburban areas of the corporation.

The Shramik Vidyapeeth, as an institution committed to the weaker section in the urban community, envisages and implements different types of vocational and technical courses, which cater to the employment and self-employment needs of the beneficiaries. Over the last 14 years there has been a steady growth in the quantity of the programmes conducted along with the number of beneficiaries. The SVP, Thiruvananthapuram, has organised 1501 courses thereby imparting training to 36,397 beneficiaries within the last 14 years. The total number of other different activities is 1,159 from which 1,30,661 person have benefited. The total number of programmes (courses and activities) conducted during the period of 14 years is 2,660 making an average of 190 programmes per year. The total number of beneficiaries who attended the programmes during the last 14 years is 1,67,058.

The University Press established in 1964, caters to the printing requirements of the University and its departments. The Press had imported machines when it began functioning. Later on, two HMT letter presses and one offset machine were procured. The press is now capable of undertaking a lion’s share of the printing requirements of the University.
