N.S.S. College, Nilamel is one of the several colleges which came into existence as a result of the far-sighted vision of the late Shri. Mannathu Padmanabhan. The college was upgraded in October 1969 with the introduction of B. Sc. in Mathematics, Botany and Zoology and B.A. in Economics, History and Malayalam.
 

It imparts instruction in Commerce at Degree level and in Malayalam at the Post graduate level. In addition to its academic achievements, the college is noted for its diverse activities of co-curricullar nature through the college Arts Club, Film Club, Adult Education Programme, National Service Scheme, National Cadet Crops and Alumni Association.
