The Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology was started in December, 2006 as part of the ‘Suvanrna Keralam’ celebrations. This Centre presently offers M.Phil and PhD programmes. The course content of the interdisciplinary M.Phil course of one year duration includes the topics: (i) Physics and Chemistry of Nanomaterials, (ii) Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and (iii) Synthesis and Characterization of Nanomaterials. The course content also includes project work during which the students will be imparted practical training in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
The qualification for M.Phil admission is a second class Master’s Degree in Nanoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Photonics with not less than 55% marks subject to the rules of relaxation for SC/ST candidates. Admission to the course is based on the marks obtained in the M.Sc and in an entrance test. While the qualifications for admission to the PhD program is same as those for M.Phil program, candidates must additionally have qualified in the Entrance test conducted by the University/NET/GATE/SLET or have a fellowship awarded by KSCSTE or candidates must have M.Phil Degree in Nanoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Photonics.
The Centre has adequate experimental facilities and more facilities are being added. Presently, the academic activities of the Centre are concentrated in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology related to Physical/Chemical Sciences. The Centre has plans to start academic activities in Biological sciences as well.
The Academic Committee of the University of Kerala has decided that for the purpose of higher education and job, M.Phil and PhD Degrees in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology be considered equivalent to M.Phil and PhD Degrees in the subject of the M.Sc Degrees of the candidates, due to the interdisciplinary character of these Degrees.
