History
of the College
In 1963,when Loyola College of Social Sciences was initiated,
it was the first ever attempt in the state to establish a
college purely for teaching, research and extension in Social
Sciences. The Jesuits, well known all over the world as educators
par excellence, then foresaw the relevance of such an institution.Poineered
by Rev. Fr. Joseph Edamaram, the then provincial, the College
was affiliated to the University of Kerala.Located in the
centre of a sprawling and Green Campus, combining the simplicity
of the rural and the sophistication of the urban, the College
offers an ideal location for learning .Right from the beginning
the College had a focus on social service and reaching out
to the people. Early stages of the College were marked by
emphasis on quality teaching and social service. In the seventies
the College took up Adult education and Extension work, sponsored
initially by some NGO s later toward the end og the seventies,
by the University Grants Commission. This period was also
marked by the entry of the College in to serious research
and publication.
1980's were marked by the interest in more vigorous extension
activities and research. The initiation of the LOYOLA
JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, in 1987,was a significant
event and it coincided with the inauguration of the Silver
Jubilee Celebrations of the College. Poverty alleviation programmes
were the focus in the 1990'S.The College was appointed the
Field Training Institute (FTI) for the urban Basic services
for the Poor Programme and the training and policy input by
the college were renmarkable. In the new millennium the college
continues its focus on maintaining excellence in teaching,
learning, research and extension with social sensitivity.
The NAAC accreditation at FIVE STAR LEVEL in 2001 was a turning
point in the history of the college.
The report of the Peer Team, which consisted of two prominent
educationists and a NAAC official, who visited the college
as part of the process of assessment, says that:
"Loyola College of Social Sciences with its commitment to
traditional pedagogic approaches and end-uses is responding
very effectively to the emerging vibrant issues and problems
of the society through the three postgraduate programs. With
a limitation of homogeneous syllabus and evaluation procedures
suggested by the university, the college as an affiliating
institution is alive to provide various pragmatic options
to go beyond the prescribe syllabus and evaluation procedures
for the purposes of teaching, learning and extension. Towards
this the Loyola Extension services- an in-house body is a
well-organized one. Besides this, the college follows a continuous
evaluation procedure through weekly, monthly and effectively.
Bridge courses are also offered for the new entrants. These
bridge courses appear to be modules, which can be adopted
by the teaching insititutions. The Loyola....Extension Services
besides being useful for the purposes of field work and training
for the students of MSW, is also involved in promoting various
service programmes, research and survey exersices. The consultancy
and training programmes of the college are helping the college
to generate funds. Currently the college is planning for linkage
programmes with international agencies. The student support
programme is impressive. It has further noted that the management,
faculty and the students have shown greater enthusiasm o present
a self-analysis of the report for the NAAC and eager to get
the self analysis report validated for discovering the strengths
and weakness as an academic institution."
