The College initially known as Government Training College, was recently upgraded and renamed as Govt. College of Teacher Education. Way back in 1911 the Model Schooll was converted into a Postgraduate training college affiliated to the Madras University.
 

In 1937, it was taken over by the Travancore University and the name of the course offered was later changed to L.T and B.T. Following the all India pattern, it was changed to B.Ed. and the college was affiliated to the University of Kerala. The Govt. Model High School, Thiruvananthapuram is the training school attached to this college. The Principal of the Govt. Training School acts as the Principal of the Govt. Model High School which shares its premises.
