The college is under the administrative control of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Kerala. The college that started functioning in 1983 is affiliated to the University of Kerala. There are 12 teaching departments in this college, Six of them, Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry, Pharmacy & Microbiology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and Community Medicine. The clinical departments are Practice Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Organon of Medicine, Materia Medica and Case taking & Repertorisation. The Central Library has important newspapers and periodicals and there are 14 scientific and medical journals, particularly in Homeopathy. The college has a separate book bank for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes. A 50-bedded inpatient block was started along with the D.P.D which had started functioning earlier.
