The Centre for Canadian Studies was started
in 1991 with Dr. Jameela Begum as Director of
the Centre. The Centre was the first one to
be started in the South and continues to be
the only major Centre in the South. Under the
leadership of the Director new courses have
been started at the PG level and many research
programmes are on. The Centre was also able
to initiate interdisciplinary programmes. The
Centre has organized over 20 International and
National Conferences. As a recognition of the
meritorious services rendered by the Centre
the UGC has identified it as an Area Study Centre.
The University of Kerala can justly be proud
of this achievement since this is the only Area
Study Centre in the University and shares this
honour with Delhi, Bombay and Baroda Universities.
The credit for this achievement goes to the

Association for Canadian Studies (1999-2003),
