Chartered in 1866 by the then Maharaja of Travancore as a division of University College, the institution has a long history. Its bifurcation in 1924, amalgamation with University College again in 1942, abolition of the Intermediate course in 1956 (substituted by Pre-University course and later replaced by Pre-Degree in 1964), starting of B.A. Economics & B.Com. in 1971 etc. – Yes, this college has seen it all.

 

Throughout its history, the college has always had one of the best teaching faculties in the State. No wonder the institution has won the R. Sankar Award for the best college two times in a row since its inception in performance in sports and games has also been bagged by this college recently.

The College Union, the two wings – Army & Navy – of N.C.C., the three units of National Service Scheme ACERS – Arts College Rhetoric Society, and various Science Clubs provide a platform for talented students to develop their skills in extracurricular activities. The Parent-Teacher Association renders all possible help to the Principal in the developmental activities. Out of 706 distinctions in the Pre-Degree Examinations of March 1998 alone, the Government Arts College secured 173, i.e. 23% of the total distinctions.

Faced with the problem of delinking of Pre-Degree, the college is thinking of starting restructured graduate and post graduate courses.
