Consultancy Services
|
The
University of Kerala now offers consultancy services at
national and international levels through its different
departments. The University Consultancy Cell with the Vice-Chancellor
as chairman, co-ordinates this activity.
The Cell has already started consultancy work related to
product and technology transfer and patent protection. One
instance is that of the steps for patent protection and
transfer of technology of the 'Anti-larval preparation from
plant sources' carried out by the Department of Biochemistry.
This research work was carried out by the former Head of
the Department, Dr. R.Kaleysa Raj. Another area of work
undertaken by the Cell is consultancy in modernisation efforts
like product diversification of corporates. For instance,
the Cell offers services to Scooters Kerala Ltd., a public
sector undertaking, in the production of soft ferrites.
This work is carried out in the Department of Futures Studies.
The Consultancy Cell is expected to usher in more professionalism
and competition in the research activities. It will also
help the University to develop better links with the industry
and to attain an optimum level of self sufficiency in the
growth of competitive academics.

Bacteriological
Quality of Drinking Water: Testing & Training Center
As
a prelude to an idea of ‘Science for Society’ the Department
of Biotechnology started an extension wing
on Bacteriological Quality of Drinking Water: Testing
& Training Center facility. The department in its
programme of community organisation (PCO) had earlier
undertaken a project in collaboration with Intermediate
Technology Development Group, U.K. Under this project
the department trained the Women’s council members of
Pulluvila - a fishing village 20 km away from Thiruvananthapuram,
which was devoid of sanitation, to test well-water samples
for potability. Necessary theory classes were also offered
to make them aware of the modes of transmission of water-borne
infections like typhoid, cholera, dysentery, jaundice
etc. and the ways to prevent contamination of water supplies.
This facility has been very effectively and regularly
utilised by individuals, institutions and NGOs.
